Algarve Solidarity through Solidus - Mission: Smile

Yesterday, I came across a wonderful project right here in the Algarve that made me smile. The project is solidus.pt a volunteer program piloted in Faro and with expectations to spread throughout the country in 2008. Solidus is a volunteer program that lets both those needing volunteers and those wanting to volunteer to come together in one common place and registering their needs and interests, to help the community. How great is that!?
The project went live yesterday, so its very fresh, and there maybe some hiccups using the site which is currently only in Portuguese. Solidus mission is simple: Creating Smiles, by bringing like minded people together to help others.
It’s so easy, especially this time of year to get caught up in the world wind of presents and parties, and forget how valuable our time is and how important it could be to someone who really needs a little help. This project really puts the season of giving into perspective, and is certainly making me think of what I can do to make someone smile.

I love that idea!!! We have done this on a smaller scale at my girls school using a “help needed” board!
Ola Judy, this is one of the first programs of its kind I really love the idea also, quite proud to see it starting in Faro, and hoping it spreads across the country and everywhere its needed!
From what I’ve read the organization behind this was associated with other groups and countries as part of a European and global initiative…so this type of program may be getting across the globe soon, and that would be amazing!
