Porca de Murça - Douro Tinto 2005

Some days picking out a wine takes a lot of contemplation, other times its a quick grab, and hope for the best. Recently, with guest about to arrive and no time to prepare, I made a quick dash to the new and very hip Pingo Doce supermarket, in Faro - my mission, wine and cheese!
The only thing I had in mind…was something different, from the north maybe. I picked up a bottle with a quirky name “Porca de Murca”, from Douro, looked at the back, and saw - “fresh fruit aromas and cherries” suddenly, the bottle magnetized to my hand and I couldn’t imagine leaving “fresh fruit aromas and cherries, from Douro” behind. Home we went.
With a nice spread of fruit, cheeses, olive tomato tapenade and some rustic bread, I just hoped the wine was a good pick…how could “aromas of cherries”, lead me wrong? Well, they didn’t….this was a dark, rich, velvety wine with lots of black fruit and wood notes - bold and powerful, with a soft dry finish.
In no time, the only thing left in the bottle was its “aroma” - mission accomplished. I did catch one sad look, a guest looking down the mouth of the empty bottle….considering the price, guess next trip I need to get at least two of this great Portuguese wine.
