8 Things to do in the Algarve

May 23, 2008

We’ve been itching to put together a list of things to do in the Algarve for sometime. But it’s a challenge to organize a list that appeals to everyone’s taste. Given all there is to do and see across the Algarve, from beaches, historic sites, golf, shopping, etc., it just makes putting a list together that much more difficult.

So we’re starting small with a short list of 8, we think covers some good options to have fun, relax and see some of what the Algarve has to offer.

Traveling 2.0

May 21, 2008

We were recently at a Social Media conference in Geneva, “Going-Solo”, that brought home the point of how social the web has become, how truly connected we all are, and how that can be a really good thing, most of the time. You’re probably wondering how this relates to traveling? Well, like all areas of the net, social media has also been a big factor in traveling…like AlgarveBuzz for example, it helps you see what a place is all about, before you book your ticket and spend your money. Just like, there are dozens of other sites you visit before deciding where to go, stay, what to do and so on.

Traveling 2.0

But until now, there were few places dedicated to the hard core traveler, that were social and provided first hand experiences in a consolidated format, well, it seems that’s about to change. We were recently tipped about a brand new social site for ‘travel sharing’ call Placely.com. If you like to have first hand info, tips and experiences from other globe trotters this might be a good place to check. The site is new and believe still in beta, so patient may be required.

Tavira Seafood Festival - Gastronomia do Mar

May 18, 2008

If you love fish and seafood, there’s an event happening in the historic town of Tavria you really shouldn’t miss. Sixteen local restaurants in Tavira will take part in this year’s Seafood festival. If eating fresh caught seafood wasn’t enough, sounds like there is also an “Ocean Weekend” to be given away, by one of the participating hotels. This is an invitation we don’t need to be asked twice! Hope to see you there.

Car Boot Sale - Feira Sobre Rodas

May 13, 2008

Well I have to say, I’ve never been to a Boot Sale unless it was of course for the kind you put on your feet, but this idea sounds quite interesting. When I lived in Canada, garage sales were quite popular in spring and summer; this is basically the same thing but on wheels, Garage Sales go mobile! Cool!

How does it work, how can you get involved and sell your stuff? Well, to participate you register right online, and weather you have a mini, a family car, a truck or a bus load, there are options for everyone.

algarve-semana.jpgLoud music, dark capes, dancing, excitement, and lots of party drinks – can only mean one thing: It’s Semana Académica 2008, from May 8th to the 17th, in Faro, Algarve!

The student festival (Semana Académica da Universidade do Algarve), is organized every year by students and attracts thousands of party goers, popular DJ’s and musician’s from in and out of the country.

Open to all we’ll be there Saturday, enjoying the sounds of the very talented “Hands on Approach” from Portugal, Chus & Ceballos DJ from Madrid and Groove Armada from the UK.

Things to do Algarve - May 08

May 4, 2008

May has arrived! This is the month Mother nature makes the Algarve glow, with beautiful sunshine and incredibly warm days, so it’s time to say goodbye to the chilly days and bring on the heat!

It’s also the month we start seeing a lot of pale hibernating bodies (locals and tourists alike) popping up on the beach, and soaking up the sun. If you like to relax on the beach don’t forget a good sun screen with UVA and UVB, the sun is very strong here in the south, so make sure you’re armed with some good stuff, to get you that golden tan, safely. Then get out side, there are soo many beaches to choose from. This year we started with Praia da Faro, Tavira Island and Praia da Rocha, in Portimao.

May also arrives with a variety of festivals, sporting and cultural events, so spring is ramping up quick with lot’s of things to see and do. To find out what to do in the Algarve in May, you don’t have to look too far, as you can view the entire month’s guide, courtesy of the Algarve Tourism board - click here to download the Algarve May Guide.
