After some time away, it’s nice to come back to a surprise like this!
A couple of nights ago, we were introduced to a new and special character; João Clara - a beautiful red wine from right here in the Algarve. What a wonderful and unexpected surprise - this wine is very young, but shelved for a couple of years, and WOW. Its strong aroma grabs you as soon as it’s poured and its flavor is robust and dry with mild wood and red berry flavours, and a super clean finish. Thrilled that this wine comes from right here in our backyard.

We had the pleasure of meeting this new friend at one of our favourite restaurants: Chinese Gourmet, in Amancil, so we thank Michael for introducing us! If you see this wine on the store shelves, I recommend you pick up more than one, the first one goes so fast, you really need a back up.

Here is what we ended up enjoying with our new found red: Sauteed Cracked Crab, Black Pepper Shrimp, Stir Fried Chicken Noodle, Mongolian Beef and these super fluffy white steamed buns - that have just a hint of vanilla…sooo good, we had to order a second round just to mop up the crab sauce…a great meal!

Hi Malcolm,
That’s a good question. From what I understand, Joao Clara is a new wine and the bottle we had was from a small batch produced. Nevertheless, I’ll look into this further and see what I can find for you.
If you’re looking for other great Portuguese wines, check out cortes da cima … they produce by far some of the best wines from Portugal.
I’ll keep you posted.
